I'm worried about my son, is he alright?

My son seem to be really worried if he can get into his favorite college UT Austin...Can he make it?

With a 3.56 GPA

Hes taken atleast 5 AP Classes

Three Sport Athlete(Track, Football, and Basketball)

President of Student Problems Association

Vice-President of Community Service Council

-Cornerstone Scholar Athlete Award

-Congressional Student Leadership Conference of Medicine %26amp; Healthcare

-National Youth Leadership Forum On Medicine (Experientia Docet)

-The National Society of High School Scholars

-Art National Honor Society

-And 200 Hospital Community Service Hours

His High School is very hard like ranked 13th in the nation...what do you recommend

He wants to be a Dentist or Dermatologist

Hes taking the SAT in October

He's not top 10 percent tho and hes disappointed

What college do you suggest?I'm worried about my son, is he alright?
Wow the extra-curriculars for your son are very very impressive. Those alone will take him a long way when UT Austin considers him. However, his GPA is honestly rather pretty low for UT Austin. I am also going to apply there fall of 2010, and my GPA is a 3.85 unweighted, 4.1+ weighted... I'm not doing this to gloat, but you should see what he is up against. I am also not in the top 10% of my class, so when you think about that, you got to think about the type of competition he is up against. For his SAT's, he should at least get above a 2000. I got a 2130, and a friend of mine, who is also applying, and who is also not in the top 10% got a 2200. Also, try to get him some work experience, I heard that that can also turn some heads. Hmm, let's see, that's about it, everything else is very impressive. I say if he got a 2100, then he's in, for sure.

And 13th best high school in the nation? Does he go to Highland Park or something? Wowwww, UT will also look at that.

In conclusion, I think he'll get in (and take my spot =[ ). When in doubt, apply to A%26amp;M, that's what I did, lol

Good luck!I'm worried about my son, is he alright?
Colleges want to admit someone to their school who they feel will contribute something to the community. It sounds like your son is a strong candidate. He has a strong GPA, AP classes, leadership roles, athletics and community service hours. He needs a good score on the SAT to remain competitive with UT Austin.

It's ok to take the test several times, though I wouldn't advise taking it more than 3 times. Most schools will take your highest Math, Verbal and Writing scores to derive a composite with which they use for admissions decisions.

Does UT Austin require essays or recommendations? He should start working on them now. Have several people look over his essays to ensure the highest quality.

He has a shot at UT Austin. He could improve his GPA a little, though. If he does well on the SATs, I think he should be accepted. He has a strong resume when it comes to extracurriculars, and colleges will LOVE that he played three varsity sports. That is a huge, huge plus. 75% of students at UT Austin were in the top 10% of their high school. As long as your son is in the top 15%, I think he'll be fine.

GOOD LUCK!
I think if your son is worried about if he's going to get into his favorite college, he's worrying about the wrong thing....it seems like people put such an emphasis on ones child getting into the "right" school and such a popular school can sometimes be a bad choice! Let him know that you love him and will be proud of him no matter what school he gets into.
