Isnt it time that Mark Thompson dropped 'Bomber" as a nickname?

As a Bombers fan, i'm not entirely sure whether his nickname is indeed due to his association with the Essendon Football Club, but as the Cats premiership winning coach, i'm starting to find the constant use of his nickname in the media as insulting to both Bombers and Cats fans and its beyond a joke!Isnt it time that Mark Thompson dropped 'Bomber" as a nickname?
I think it suits him, it really shows that his fame %26amp; greatness during the period of time in which he played for the bombers is not forgotten and even though he coaches geelong - he started off with the bombers which has given him the start of an outstanding coaching career - its to never forget the great hero he was at the bombers.
OK, all you bombers %26amp; cats fans out there, do you find the use of Bomber as a nickname insulting to your respective clubs??

A nickname is something that usually sticks with a person for ever. It doesn't generally change.

Oh and Carlton fans, are you offended that Guy Mckenna is referred to as Bluey even though he has never been associated with Carlton?

Gee, no kidding X Man.....Isnt it time that Mark Thompson dropped 'Bomber" as a nickname?
Nah - I'm a Cats fan and he can call himself anything he wants to and so can the media if he delivers me one more flag.

I wouldn't care if he was Pie Thompson ... oh ok well maybe I would then.

His nickname was indeed due to his association with the club. He was a great clubman and no-one at the Bombers would want to forget that. He couldn't get a firsts coaching job because Sheeds was so good and the Cats gave him his chance. Trada ... thank you Sheeds.

EDIT: Thanks Timah ... I'd never heard that. I had been told many years ago it was because he was the ultimate club man.
the nickname evolved from 'Bomba' as in 'Bomba the Jungle boy'. An old TV show from the 60's. So strictly speaking it is not an attachment to the Essendon F.C. So do you also think Paul Roos should change his name ?Isnt it time that Mark Thompson dropped 'Bomber" as a nickname?
His nickname is Bomber and that is not going to change even if he coached the Wagga Tigers!

Are you sure its linked ot the Essendon Bombers in anycase or is it just coincidence?
As appropriate as it would seem to do so, it's just something you can't do. He was, is and always will be Bomber Thompson.
you dont pick your nick name its what everyone calls you that makes it your nick name
Mark "Cat" Thompson doesn't have quite the same ring to it!

Edit. Sue T. Personally I couldn't give a fat rats clacker...
Nicknames are given, not chosen.

I don't mind it. Would Mark 'Pussy' Thompson be better?
Women just DON'T understand nicknames. Not one of his players or staff would call him Mark.

He was Bomber beforehand (and I'm still in love with him!)

Go The Dons!!!!!!!!! (next yearrrrrrrrr!!!!!!)
well he did captain our premiership side so thats how he got the name, but i agree their taking it too far!!

go dons!

brutally honest, get a life!
I think he'll always be Bomber Thompson, it suits him.
no hes had that nickname for ages you just dont drop a nickname and get a new one it dosnt work like that!
He will aways be 'Bomber' no matter what.
